Untitled Rose / 2015

cut out photo / framed / 70 x 100cm

As part of Documenta 5 in 1972, Joseph Beuys created the “Office for Direct Democracy through Referendum.” On the artist's desk stood the “Rose for Direct Democracy” — a multiple consisting of a red rose in a signed measuring cup. UNTITLED ROSE takes this iconic motif as the starting point for a critical artistic revision. The work is based on a photo found online, which was enlarged and materialized as a photo print. The rose was cut out, leaving behind an empty space whose outline is visible as a shadow.
